Bid to lower voting age
A CROSS-PARTY bid to lower the voting age from 18 to 16 was launched today.
The second reading of the Voting Age (Reduction) Bill was being heard in the House of Commons.
The Bill, which would apply to England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, has the support of Labour, Tory and Liberal Democrat backbenchers.
Leading the call, Labour's Julie Morgan said the "time is now right" for the change, lowering the voting age to 16 for parliamentary and local elections.
She said: "The purpose of my Bill is very straightforward – it is to reduce the legal voting age to 16 for all public elections across the UK."
But Tory Nigel Evans said that there had to be a "dividing line" and 18 seemed the "appropriate age".
