Best of the Best: Fish and Chips
SOME say they are bored of fish and chips but many readers have kept their fishy favourites coming through 2008 – so they have kept appearing. Here's a reminder of the establishments that are best-loved by readers:
THE REAL FOOD CAFE, Main St, Tyndrum, 01838 400235 Constantly top of the list, with dozens of recommendations over the year. Loved by the King of chips, Alex Tinto, and many others – Roy and Wilma Soulsby, Carol Howe, Roy Maxwell, Janie Milne, Margaret and Andrew Green, Anne Smart and Murdo J MacDonald.
PITTENWEEM FISH & CHIP BAR, High St, Pittenweem, 01333 311258 Doug Dear, Brian, Hazel and St Monan were among those who said Pittenweem was the finest chippie in Fife. "Beats Anstruther, always has," said St M.
ANSTRUTHER FISH BAR, Shore St, Anstruther, Fife, 01333 310518 We are always accused of laziness for putting it on our lists, but fans keep coming back. Last week, Martha Bryce was added to its list of lovers in her 'best seafood restaurant' list. Eric of Anstruther said: "Indisputably the best in Scotland, if not the UK. I have travelled all over the UK and the world and I'm still to find a fish supper I can compare to it."
NORTH BERWICK FRY, 11 Quality St, North Berwick, 01620 893246 Popular throughout the year. Paul MacMichael went after reading about it in Recommends and Donald Carmichael returned after many years and loved it.
TOWNHEAD CAF, High Street, Biggar, 01899 221001 Chip King Alex Tinto says it was only just shaded by the RFC in Tyndrum, while St Monan describes it as "excellent". A regular in the top five
L'ALBA D'ORO, Henderson Row, Edinburgh, 0131-557 2580 Harvey1955 said: "Nobody can touch it. When it comes to the nitty-gritty of taste, product awareness, ability to fry, a bit of banter, it's the first place I head for." Many other fans, too.
MHOR FISH, 75-77 Main St, Callander, 01877 330213 Regular in the charts for months.
CREEL INN, Catterline, Stonehaven, 01569 750254 Fave of long-distance Recommends fan Steve Ev(ans) from Malta.
