BEST community website
DUNBAR www.dunbar.org.uk
This was initiated more than ten years ago by the voluntary Dunbar Trades’ Association and serves a community with a population of around 7,000. With content running to over 20 pages in five categories, it is fairly easy to navigate and had nearly a million visitors last year. The site’s aim is to serve, promote and enhance the community and is now well established as a source of information and pictures, ancient and modern. The strictly moderated forums are a daily, even hourly, destination for young and old, with a huge range of topics for debate, opinion and banter.
ISLE OF LISMORE www.isleoflismore.com
This serves a community population about 180 and is a delight to browse. It has easy navigation over 15 main pages.
There has been a guest book since 2001 and individual photo albums from 23 residents include some stunning wildlife close-ups. There are community council minutes from 2002 as well as an archive of all island events since 2003, links to other island and west-coast websites.
And music, if you’re patient.
ISLE OF WHITHORN www.isleofwhithorn.com
This has a clean appearance and is very easy to browse. It serves a population of 300 residents with lots of information over more than 20 pages. Local news is regularly updated and there are lots of small pictures, ancient and modern and a visitors’ book. Maintained by residents.
COMRIE www.comrie.org.uk
A different stunning banner on each of 24 pages, showing interesting historical, nature and activities information. You will find village notices, council minutes and a message board. The site is designed to provide its local population of about 2,000 information about the village, its facilities, organisations and events.
CHIRNSIDE www.chirnside.org.uk
This has straightforward information and interesting pictures, despite a rather ugly banner and menu panel. There are 11 pages and it is operated by the local council for its 3,000 residents.
