Berti Vogts bows out

NO FOOTBALL manager deserves to be spat on or subject to physical abuse.

Berti Vogts, we have no doubt, gave of his best. But it is now widely accepted that it is time to move on. Here, his decision to resign rather than leave matters to the slow, clanking machinery of the SFA shows an innate good sense.

And Mr Vogts should not lose himself in Wagnerian gloom. Football management has long been a high-profile, high-wire act. He willingly took on one of the most challenging jobs in Europe. And he was well rewarded for doing so. Annual pay and bonuses were close to 500,000, which his farewell package will also reflect. Triumph one moment, despair the next: that’s football. The trick is to cope with every bounce.
