Benjamin prepares for the contest of his life
A MIDLOTHIAN teenager is hoping to be picked to represent Scotland at lifesaving.
Benjamin Witz, 17, of Penicuik, is training to be selected for the Scottish team at the Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in Edmonton, Canada, in 2009.
Trials begin in January, and the former Beeslack Community High School pupil has already received a boost in the shape of legendary cricket umpire Harold "Dickie" Bird. He was given 330 from Mr Bird's personal sports foundation to buy wetsuit, trunks and goggles.
The teenager, who also plays for Penicuik Cricket Team, said he was honoured to receive the donation from such a high-profile sporting figure.
He said: "It was quite a big deal, receiving a cheque with his signature on it. He set up the foundation to help youngsters who want to set themselves up in sport but don't have funding to do it."
Each year the Scottish Lifesaving Team selects up to ten people, of both sexes, to train for events at the games. Events include a 200m obstacle swim, a 50m mannequin carry, and the "rescue medley".
