Bear necessities provided in Highlands
THE UK's only polar bear is preparing to move house after the £75,000 needed for the project was secured following a public appeal, zoo chiefs said yesterday.
Mercedes will relocate from Edinburgh Zoo to the Highland Wildlife Park, near Kingussie, where a new enclosure has been built for her.
Her new home extends over four acres of land which is typical of the tundra environment habitat of the species.
It is one of the largest polar bear enclosures in Europe.
The last chance to see Mercedes at Edinburgh Zoo, where she has lived since 1984, will be Sunday 18 October.
Final preparations will then be made for her departure, and she will travel north by road in a transport crate, which she has been trained to walk into by keepers.
