BBC Trust backs Thompson over Gaza appeal

THE BBC Trust said yesterday it would not overrule the decision not to broadcast a humanitarian appeal for Gaza.

Mark Thompson, the director general, refused to air the appeal from the Disasters Emergency Committee last month, saying it would have risked compromising the BBC's impartiality.

The BBC's refusal to air the DEC appeal caused a storm of protest – around 40,000 complaints were lodged with the corporation, and a further 200 appeals were made to the trust.

Sir Michael Lyons, the trust's chairman, said: "Having carefully examined the director general's reasons, the trust believes he acted correctly throughout.
