Bail crime on increase
THE number of crimes and offences committed by people on bail has increased by more than 10,000 in just four years.
Figures show that there were 18,082 crimes and offences committed in 2002-03 where the person was on bail. But by 2006-07 that had risen to 28,965.
That total included 543 non-sexual crimes of violence and 185 crimes of indecency, as well as 7,233 crimes of dishonesty and 4,499 motor vehicle offences.
The figures were revealed by justice secretary Kenny MacAskill in response to a question from Labour justice spokesman Richard Baker, who described the increase in crimes and offences committed by people on bail "worrying".
