David Roche (Letters, 4 May) complains about “Jock-bashing” in the media, and particularly on a recent episode of Have I Got News For You, presented by the actor Ray Winstone.
As a Scot who lived in England for more than 20 years (but was too homesick to stay) I would argue that most of this is actually good-natured teasing, as you would rib a beloved family member.
It does seem quite different from the kind of anti-English sentiment one sees in Scotland, some of which is extremely aggressive in tone.
I’m not saying it is widespread, but it does seem to be considered acceptable by some.
The unhelpful abuse dished out by some CyberNats is a case in point.
