Letter: Festering shame of sectarianism

AS ONE who has little interest in the sport of football I take a fairly dispassionate interest in the continuing debate about the Old Firm (Debate, 3 April).

But from the concerns coming from the wider community clearly there is something inherently disturbing about the Old Firm that goes far beyond the usual entertainment-industry hype which normally surrounds football. Possibly a clue to that unease lies in your news report of the car-bomb murder of a 25-year-old Roman Catholic policeman by the IRA, or whatever they call themselves this week.

Until Scotland's media and politicians are brave enough to face up to and condemn, and to advocate the closing down of, any organisation where murder and murderers are flagrantly extolled, the rest of the world will continue to look on this festering shame with ever growing distaste.
