Background: Strong opinions dominate planning concerns

FEARS over the damaging impact a major windfarm development would have on one of Scotland's leading hotels saw the plans thrown out by councillors only last week.

Eight turbines, more than 300 feet high, would have been built close to the Gleneagles resort, in Perthshire, under West Coast Energy's plans.

Gleneagles bosses raised fears that the wind farm earmarked for Strathearn would impact on the hotel's historic gardens and landscape.

They also claimed it could damage the prospects for economic growth as Gleneagles is due to host golf's Ryder Cup event in 2014.

Perth and Kinross Council's planning committee heard the windmills could have a negative effect on viewers watching "television broadcasts" of the Europe versus America golfing spectacle to be held in three years time.

Some 208 letters were received in support of the wind farm, with 291 against.
