Baby seals spotted on islands

THE first seal pups born on the Forth islands this year have been spotted by wildlife watchers.

Visitors to the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick, East Lothian, reported sightings of the pups on the Isle of May after spotting them through the centre's remote cameras on the island.

The sightings come just a week after a video link-up to the island was opened by TV conservationist Professor David Bellamy, who also unveiled a new series of podcasts that will follow the seals' progress over the coming weeks.

The arrival of the first newborns on the island marks the beginning of a winter spectacle that sees hundreds of grey seals arrive on the islands in the Firth of Forth to give birth.
