Award high for Scots climber
A UNIQUE award created by an Edinburgh artist has been presented to the world-renowned mountaineer Dr Hamish MacInnes.
Dr MacInnes was the first recipient of the Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture, set up to promote mountain climbing in Scotland.
The award itself was made by Capital-based stained-glass artist Emma Butler-Cole Aiken. The award will be permanently housed in the Fort William Museum, with a smaller replica piece being awarded to each recipient.
Dr MacInnes, 77, is a member of the Scottish Sporting Hall of Fame, was deputy leader on Chris Bonington's first Everest expedition and designed the first all-metal ice axe.
A former leader of the Glencoe Rescue Team, he was known as the Old Fox for his sometimes secretive ascents of mountains. He has also been involved in a number of Hollywood films, including The Eiger Sanction.
