Atsuo rocks Leith with solo show

Japanese stone sculptor Atsuo Okamoto's has unveiled his first solo UK exhibition at the Corn Exchange Gallery in Leith.

Atsuo, who was born in Hiroshima in 1952, works in granite, and the piece on show in Edinburgh is called "Faraway Mountain". It is made using the traditional Japanese carving technique known as wari modoshi, or "splitting and returning".

The 12 granite pillars can be pushed together to form the original pieces of stone.

Also on show are some of his "turtle" pieces, made from a single rock, which was split into smaller parts, with each piece sent to age in a different part of the world for ten years before being returned to the artist.

The exhibition runs until September 30.
