Tennis legends tournament amongst major events lined up for Edinburgh

A TENNIS legends tournament, a mass cycling event and an international diving competition are among the major new events being lined up for Scotland’s capital, it has emerged.

It is hoped the likes of John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker, Jim Courier and Pat Cash will be among the stars to grace the city if a bid to attract the ATP Champions Tour is successful.

The event has already been successfully staged at London’s Royal Albert Hall and the expanded EICC, due to open next year, has been offered to organisers.

Talks are underway about staging “Sky Ride,” a mass participation bike ride, across the city, following the success of Glasgow’s participation in a nationwide campaign aimed at getting more than a million people riding a bike by 2013.

Meanwhile the new-look Royal Commonwealth Pool, which is due to reopen next month, is being lined up to play host to its first international event, the FINA World Diving Series. The complex is already due to be a venue in the Commonwealth Games when it is staged in Scotland in 2014.

Edinburgh is also due to host a swim team training camp at the pool for Britain’s Olympic hopefuls, as well as a pre-Olympic international basketball tournament.

I used to look forward to the tennis when there was grass courts.I saw a McEnroe Connors match in Edinburgh. Think the last tournament i saw was a ladies doubles. I also really enjoyed watching the international athletic stars at Meadowbank. Too many to name them all we had such names as Christie, Black, Wells, Bukta. I also watched a few Scottish Open Badminton Championships and seen some world class players. All the top class sports events have gone to Glasgow Alas Edinburgh pulled out of having top class sport. A disgrace for our capital city

Good to see Scotland getting something in the way of a decent tennis tournament, even if it's only the stars of yesteryear. Clearly the English dominated Lawn Tennis Association has no intention of putting anything Scotland's way despite Scotland providing its best players, male and female these days. The LTA spent more on Wimbledon's roof than it has in the whole history of tennis in Scotland. Just another little hint of how the London centric English establishment views Scotland, though of course it did welcome and embrace major golf tournaments when they spread out over the UK. Remember the Great British adage: SCOTS ASSETS ARE BRITISH, ENGLISH ASSETS ARE ENGLISH. But not for long. VOTE YES.
