James Hogg
REGARDED as a romantic novelist and poet, Hogg’s first novels were The Brownie of Bodsbeck (1818), The Three Perils of Man (1822), and The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner (1824).
The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner was the first novel to use flashback in storytelling and is his most famous work. He also contributed stories to Blackwood's Magazine.
The toast of London’s literary society, Hogg suffered various financial difficulties and was eventually bankrupted in 1830.
Despite having an influence on many Scottish writers, James Hogg is generally undervalued as a Scottish literary great, but there are plans to republish many of his works.
