In pictures: Giant poppies painted onto West Lothian’s grass pyramids

WEST LOTHIAN’S grass pyramids, which motorists can see from the M8 motorway, have had giant poppies painted on them to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the poppy appeal.

The flowers were painted by ground staff from Murrayfield and Hampden stadiums earlier this week.

Staff from the Scottish Poppy Appeal are hoping to raise more money than ever in the organisation’s 90th year.

The poppies will remain on the pyramids for the next fortnight.

Initially constructed in 1993 by the Scottish artist Patricia Leighton, the pyramids form part of a sculpture called ‘Sawtooth’ which was inspired by the characteristic shale bings symbolising West Lothian’s history.

In the past, sheep grazing on the pyramids have been painted bright red to entertain passing motorists.

The pyramids form part of the ‘Sculpture corridor’ between Glasgow and Edinburgh, which also includes ‘The Horn’ at Polkemmet Park.
