Art house beats noise fears with late shows-only vow

A POPULAR arts venue will reopen for the festival this year after being allowed to stay open beyond 11pm.

The Roxy Art House, which is no longer open throughout the year as a result of the collapse of owner Edinburgh University Settlement, is to be operated as a Fringe venue by Zoo Venues.

The Hereford-based firm's application for a temporary theatre licence from 10am until 1.30am during the Fringe had attracted concern from police, who noted that a planning restriction is in place that only allows it to operate until 11pm because of noise fears.

But councillors on the licensing sub-committee of the regulatory committee agreed to allow it to stay open until 1.30pm as long as it does not sell alcohol after 11pm.

Committee convener Rob Munn said: "They were clear that they had understood the situation and only wanted to stay open in order to have more shows to break even."
