Around town: Shining a new light on Hume theory

Scottish Enlightenment philosophers such as David Hume laid the foundations for Indian independence, Scots historian Michael Fry will argue this week.

Mr Fry will put forward his view at the Hume Conference at Edinburgh University today to mark the 300th anniversary of Hume's birth.

Nobel-prize winning economist and philosopher Amartya Sen, and Emma Rothschild, a professor of history and economics will also attend.

Hands-on day for robot fans

Children can explore the workings of robot arms in a free workshop at the Scottish Mining Museum in Newtongrange on July 27.

The session, for children aged seven years or over, runs from 2pm to 3pm. Younger children can also take part if their parents stay to help.

Drink up for HIV charity

A SERIES of comedy fundraisers will be held at the New Town Bar during the Edinburgh Festival.

Hosted by Australia's Bob Downe and Scottish Comedian of the Year 2009 Scott Agnew, the events - on August 7, 14, 21 and 28 at 4pm - will raise money for Waverley Care.

Iberdrola rolls out research scholarships

THREE Edinburgh University students are to receive scholarships from Iberdrola, the parent company of ScottishPower.

The company has granted 37 scholarships for the 2011-12 academic year as part of its energy for research programme. The three students will be working towards Masters degrees in Carbon Management and Sustainable Energy Systems and a PhD in Marine Renewable Technology.

Housing group's accolades

Port of Leith Housing Association has been awarded a bronze award by Investors in People (IIP) Scotland and a bronze award from Healthy Working Lives.

The Bronze award is given to companies who go beyond the basic IIP standards.

Dalmeny kids' challenge leaves cars standing

PUPILS at Dalmeny Primary School have been congratulated in the Scottish Parliament over their Zero Car Challenge Day.

The youngsters asked their parents to leave the car at home and found 11 different modes of transport for getting to school, including walking, cycling and roller-skating. Others went by spacehopper, skateboard, pony and even boat.

In a motion at Holyrood, Edinburgh Western SNP MSP Colin Keir praised the school's efforts and encouraged it to continue setting an example.
