Armed forces' benefits slashed by £250m
The Ministry of Defence has set out details of a £250 million cut in armed forces' allowances by 2014-15.
Defence minister Andrew Robathan said the reduction - first announced in last October's Strategic Defence and Security Review - represented the "best balance between affordability and fairness".
The slashed benefits for service personnel include travel from home to work, daily subsistence costs and career bonuses.
In a written statement to MPs, Mr Robathan said: "Proper support to our service personnel is essential. An appropriate set of allowances is an important element of that support, and will remain so in the future. However, it cannot be immune from careful scrutiny to ensure that it remains appropriate."
