Architects appointed to draw up £21m centre

AN architecture firm has been appointed to design a new £21 million health centre.

The project in East Lothian will be carried out by jmarchitects, after they were chosen by NHS Lothian following approval of the centre's outline business case.

It is hoped the Musselburgh Primary Care Centre will be complete by 2011, and it will comprise space for three GP practices and a host of other services.

Peter McCormick, the firm's project director, said: "We are delighted and honoured to be awarded this significant commission and look forward to working with NHS Lothian and the community to create a primary care centre that will provide a stimulating environment for patients and staff and a landmark building that Musselburgh will be proud of."

Services included at the centre include podiatry, physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and community dental services.

East Lothian Council's public health spokesman Cllr Roger Knox added: "The council has had extensive negotiations with Lothian Health about the future health provision across the county. The new centre will provide a wide range of services for people of all ages, not just from Musselburgh but also further afield."
