Architect says Adam Smith house needs glass cube extension

CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a giant glass structure onto the home one of Scotland's greatest thinkers will preserve the structure for years to come, a public inquiry has heard.

Architect Ed Kelly rejected claims by conservationists that Edinburgh Business School's proposed 2 million redevelopment of Panmure House, the former home of economist Adam Smith, would ruin the A-listed building.

He said the glass cube atrium, slammed by local residents as "ugly", would protect the fabric of the 17th century townhouse, due to become an education and research centre.

He said the ultra-clear glass enabled the building to be seen "as if the glass is not there" and rejected claims that other designs had not been adequately explored.

The inquiry also heard Heriot-Watt University had no alternatives uses for the building and if the plans were rejected, it was likely to be put up for sale.
