Architect jobs 'fall by half'
HALF of architects in Scotland have lost or face losing their jobs, it was reported today.
Nick Barley, the director of the Lighthouse, the National Centre for Architecture and Design, said the word around the industry was about 50 per cent could be unemployed, although they have no hard figures. He called on the Scottish Government for help.
He said: "Last year we contributed about 1.5 billion to Scotland's economy; this year it won't be same. I don't want to sow the seeds of panic but I want the government to understand this is a major priority."
The Edinburgh architect Malcolm Fraser, whose firm made lay-offs last year, said construction professionals, builders and contractors could be next.
There are about 3000 working architects in Scotland.
