Apprentices set to ship in for seafaring festival
APPRENTICES from across Scotland will line the deck when the Sail Training Association’s tall ship arrives at Leith Docks tomorrow.
The 200ft long Prince William will take part in the International Festival of the Sea following an eight-day trip from Aberdeen via the Continent.
A total of 48 youngsters from throughout Scotland are on board as part of various apprenticeship schemes. Moored alongside the Royal Yacht Britannia, Prince William will be joining the Royal Navy, Viking longships, other tall ships and classic boats for the four-day maritime spectacular.
Visitors will be invited to inspect the ship above and below deck on guided tours. Around half of the trainees stay aboard to carry out daily demonstrations on manning a tall ship. Prince William will leave Leith next Tuesday.
Statues celebrating Leith’s maritime history were due to be officially unveiled today in the run-up to the Festival of the Sea. Three life-size "loitering" sailors, created by Edinburgh artist Sharon Averbuch, have been sited next to an existing mural at Leith Library.
