Applications flood in for labourer's job

A LABOURER'S position at an engineering firm in the Borders attracted more than 100 application in just four days, with many enquiries coming from the Lothians.

Bosses at water quality engineering firm Panton McLeod, based in Roxburghshire, were "shocked" to discover people applying for a single junior position from Edinburgh and the Lothians, and from as far afield as Newcastle, Cardiff and Glasgow.

Operations director Paul Henderson said: "In the past, we've put adverts out for positions and had very little interest but now, because of the state of the economy, we've been bombarded with CVs and notes of interest.

"The construction and engineering industry is in a bad state at the moment and there are many people across the whole UK who are currently out of work.

"We've had quite a few people from Edinburgh and Lothians enquiring about the job, even though it's based in the Borders."
