Apology to relatives of World's End victims

RELATIVES of the victims of the World's End murders have received an official apology from the prosecutor at the centre of the collapsed trial, it emerged yesterday.

Relatives of Helen Scott and Christine Eadie came face-to-face with Alan Mackay, the advocate depute in charge of the case.

Crown Office officials have disclosed the meeting took place to discuss a secret report into the handling of the trial of Angus Sinclair, the man accused of the murders of the teenagers, who had been on a night out in Edinburgh, in October 1977.

The trial judge ruled there was no case to answer, while Mr Mackay did not turn up to hear the case being thrown out after just ten days of evidence. He was officially declared a missing person before he contacted his wife.

The Crown Office confirmed the meeting took place, but said it had no plans to publish the inquiry report, which is said to conclude no-one was to blame for the collapse of Sinclair's trial.
