Animal testing essential
I am shocked to see that David Martin, Scotland's most senior member of the European Parliament, is regurgitating misleading animal rights propaganda in his letter calling for an end to ape experiments (Letters, 29 October).
Great apes have not been used in the UK for decades. But the use of a very small number of monkeys has been essential to develop treatments for life-threatening conditions such as stroke and Parkinson's disease. These will cause terrible suffering to many people who live in Scotland. Scotland has become a world leader in hi-tech medical research. Mr Martin should be welcoming this, not trying to put a stop to it.
