Animal groups in fresh calls to ban snares

ANIMAL campaigners will renew their demand for a total ban on snares when they take their case to the Scottish Parliament today.

It comes just two weeks after Environment Minister Mike Russell ruled out a total ban.

Instead, he told MSPs new controls were being brought in to limit their use, along with measures to reduce unnecessary suffering.

But Louise Robertson, of the League Against Cruel Sports, and Libby Anderson, of Advocates for Animals, argue the measures the Scottish Government is introducing do not go far enough. The two campaigners will give evidence to MSPs on Holyrood's Public Petitions Committee today.

The petition calls on the Parliament to urge the government to introduce provisions to ban the manufacture, sale, possession and use of all snares.

Ms Robertson said: "We believe that snares are cruel, indiscriminate traps and it is unacceptable that they are being used to capture and kill Scotland's animals."
