Anger at TV film about prince being captured

The head of the armed forces has written to Channel 4 to demand that it does not show a "dramatised documentary" based on what would happen if Prince Harry were to be taken prisoner in Afghanistan.

The 90-minute film, called The Taking Of Prince Harry, features contributions from former hostages and intelligence experts. It is scheduled to be shown on Channel 4 at 9pm on Thursday.

A defence source said Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup argued in a letter to Channel 4's chairman, Lord Burns, that the programme would be distressing for the families of service personnel and potentially undermine the security and morale of troops in Afghanistan.

A Channel 4 spokeswoman said it had replied to Sir Jock about his concerns, adding: "The film is rooted in expert testimony and is a serious journalistic examination of a current issue. It treats the subject matter sensitively.

"It is a legitimate subject for documentary to explore the risks that Prince Harry faces as a high-value target."
