Album review: Brian McNeill, The Baltic Tae Byzantium
BRIAN McNEILL The Baltic Tae Byzantium Greentrax CDTRAX 341, £11.74 ****
The ex-Battlefield Band singer, songwriter and instrumentalist's identification with Europe runs deep. His mother was Austrian and here he sketches the Scots diaspora across the continent in ten songs of soldiers, pedlars, farm improvers and men of the cloth, and characters like Bothwell, Knox and Clementine Walkinshaw.
A powerful guest list includes Dick Gaughan and Sylvia Barnes on backing vocals and Fraser Spiers on harmonica, and McNeill's CD proves a worthy successor to his migrant song-stories in Back O The North Wind.
