Album review: Sharleen Spiteri - The Movie Songbook
SHARLEEN SPITERI: THE MOVIE SONGBOOK ** MERCURY, £13.99
ONLY two albums into her solo career and Sharleen Spiteri has already succumbed to the indulgent move of recording a swish covers album with a full orchestra. The theme is music for the movies, although the vast majority of her selections – including Olivia Newton John's Xanadu, Yvonne Elliman's If I Can't Have You, Simon & Garfunkel's Sound Of Silence and Berlin's Take My Breath Away – have a pop life beyond the films they first appeared in. As with her solo debut, Melody, her singing and the glossy production are immaculate, but this time she is lacking the soulfulness that comes with a personal connection to the material, so the whole enterprise just sounds like big-budget karaoke.
