Album review: Sade - Soldier Of Love
SADE Soldier Of Love ** Sony 888697638812, £12.99
Suddenly it is 1984 again as the smooth operator promises us The Moon And The Sky to open her first new album in a decade. Then Soldier Of Love brings a pleasingly taut production to the slick party, a big booming synthesised bass threatening to crack the veneer. It's as if Grace Jones has been taking the "nice" medicine, but all too quickly the familiar politeness of Sade returns.
Skin has a flawless complexion but no character; Long Hard Road aspires to folky grit, but despite little glimpses of feedback and an emotional crack in the voice, everything here has the emotion polished from it.
