Album review: La Roux
LA ROUX La Roux ** Polydor 2703635
Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid are the quirky pop duo de jour, and may have succeeded in trumping the Ting Tings in the irritation stakes.
Bulletproof is a catchy tune, but the laboured Eighties-obsessed arrangements rapidly grate, and Jackson's voice, while pleasant, lacks any discernible charisma.
Just when you think there is a glimpse of the real La Roux on the more reflective Cover My Eyes, the old Vince Clarke synthesiser lines come fluttering out. Fascination shares a title with a Human League tune but there the similarity ends. Eighties pop music was never this dull, because back then it was all fresh and new.
