Winning American Idol in 2002 seemed to make Clarkson really annoyed, and she channelled this grumpiness into the first five years of a successful career as little miss hacked off. After an abortive attempt at artistic independence, she is back in harness. So is the opening 'My Life Would Suck Without You' an apology for daring to try to do it on her own? Probably. 'Don't Let Me Stop You' is a brawler of a tune and the hypnotic 'If I Can't Have You' has a brilliantly tacky electro riff stomping all over it.

This isn't a great album, but it does have some of the best pop songs you will hear this year.
