Album review: Kaki King
KAKI KING: JUNIOR **** COOKING VINYL
THE mesmeric Kaki King is the only woman ever to be named a Guitar God by Rolling Stone. This Atlanta-based musician is a different breed of guitar hero, one who favours subtlety and creativity over flashy displays on the fretboard. In recent years, she has moved away from solely instrumental work, refusing – unlike other guitar virtuosos – to rest on her laurels.
For her latest album, she has formed a power trio – the power lying in the songwriting and her pure, soaring indie vocals as much as the intuitive playing. As a result, King is liberated rather than trammelled by her technical expertise and Junior emerges as a dynamic left-field pop album which bears comparison with the rockier work of Kristin Hersh.
