Album review: Gil Scott-Heron - I'm New Here XL
GIL SCOTT-HERON I'm New Here XL **** XLCD471, £11.99
At 60 years old, Gil Scott-Heron is still an angry, articulate voice, and here fashions something vital and exhilarating out of less than 30 minutes of material.
Whether he is covering his own songs – The Vulture gets a ravaged reworking – or interpreting the Smog tune for the title track, he equals the intensity of the material he recorded in his prime, such as The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.
The electro voodoo of his reading of Robert Johnson's Me And The Devil makes the hairs stand up on the back of the neck.
