Album review: Dave Formula
DAVE FORMULA: SATELLITE SWEETHEART *** WIRE-SOUND, £10.99
THIS may only matter to music fans of a certain age but Satellite Sweetheart is the album that finally reunited post-punk legends Magazine.
During the making of his solo debut, keyboard player Dave Formula succeeded in drafting all his fellow band members (including the late, great John McGeoch) for cameo appearances, alongside the likes of Swing Out Sister vocalist Corinne Drewery, jazz trombonist Dennis Rollins, David McAlmont, delivering a louche cover of the Magazine track Parade, and Robert Wyatt, just about audible on backing vocals. It's a right old mish-mash, with each track drawing on some combination of jazz, blues, funk, Latin and dub sounds, to create a charming but anachronistic document of Formula's formative influences, including his childhood memories of cosmonauts Yuri Gagarin and satellite sweetheart Valentina Tereshkova.
