Album review: Brass Jaw: Branded

Brass Jaw: Branded Keywork Records, £14.99 ****

I'VE been an admirer of this Glasgow-based trumpet-and-sax quartet since they first came together, but listening to them on several occasions this summer, they sounded as though they had moved onto a new plane. This new CD bears out that impression, and if there is undeniably extra value to be had in seeing their increasingly movement-conscious live performances, Branded is a superb showcase for their energised and inventive playing and arranging. The addition of Ryan Quigley's trumpet to the saxophones of Paul Towndrow (alto), Konrad Wiszniewski (tenor) and Allon Beauvoisin (baritone) gives the group's musical textures a distinctly different feel to other saxophone quartets, and their consistently clever arrangements and compositions are both brilliantly conceived and succinct, with nothing outstaying its welcome. Sparkling arrangements of The Beatles' Drive My Car and Frank Zappa's Peaches En Regalia augment their original material.
