Album review: Battlefield Band, Zama Zama
Battlefield Band Zama Zama * * * * Temple Records COMD2102, £12.72
Ripping open with a tight instrumental set linking India to Brittany, Ireland and Galicia/Asturias, the album shows off the Batties' powerfully emotive skills on pipes and fiddle over guitar and keyboards and takes us into what used to be described as a concept album, centred on greed and gold.
If the band's own lyrics don't attain the same high quality, there is much variety, with a traditional Gaelic song performed by guest piper Allan MacDonald, and even one from the pen of Nina Simone.
