Aircraft carrier contracts worth £33m come north
BUSINESSES in Scotland have won contracts worth almost £33.2 million for work on the UK's biggest aircraft carriers.
The Aircraft Carrier Alliance said four contracts have been awarded to seven suppliers who will provide a number of vital services and parts for the ships.
Elements of the two Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers are being built at shipyards across the UK and the 65,000-tonne vessels will be put together at Rosyth in Fife.
The HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales are due to enter service in 2016 and around 2018 respectively.
An 18 million contract has been awarded to Wiltshire-based Wincanton for a massive storage facility near Glasgow, a 15m one for the installation of cables has gone to Balfour Beatty Engineering Services, while a contract worth more than 44,000 has been awarded to Glasgow-based Edmundson Electrical Ltd for component parts.
