Aid targeted for alcoholics
AN ORGANISATION has been launched to campaign for better NHS treatment of alcoholics.
UK Advocates has highlighted a number of areas where it feels hospitals and health boards could do better when treating those with an alcohol dependency.
The Evening News revealed last week that 100 people a month in the Lothians are treated for alcohol poisoning.
The organisation said there was hostility within the NHS towards abstinence-based treatment; that drugs were overused in treating some alcoholics; and not enough testing is done to establish the physical damage people with the addiction have caused themselves.
Founder Bob Beckett said: "Treating alcoholics with drugs and on a basis of modernisation is similar to advising someone with lung cancer to cut down smoking."
