A fair kick of the ball for our clubs

WHILE it is hoped the recent Wembley special football match between England and Scotland is the forerunner of a revival of the annual fixture between the two teams, what about a match between the Scottish and English football leagues?

This was another fixture of much interest in the past. Such a fixture might also help define what some see as a
difference in quality between the two leagues, and maybe explain why so few Scottish clubs outside of Celtic and Rangers are represented in Scotland’s full international squads.

I am not surprised that former England captain Terry Butcher has queried the non-selection of players from his table-topping Inverness Caley in the Scotland squad. Mark McGhee has defended inclusion of Rangers’ Lee Wallace from the third-tier Scottish League. This, however, contrasts with reports that the inclusion of Gordon Greer is because he now plays higher-tier football with Brighton in the English League. The only home players in Scotland’s squad v Croatia are from Celtic and Rangers.

The revival of Scottish League v English League matches would surely also
at least offer a fair chance
for other Scottish League clubs to be nationally represented on the park.
