A big hand for scientists behind bionic limb

SCIENTISTS who created the world's first commercially available bionic hand have been awarded a prestigious prize.

The team behind the i-LIMB has received the 2008 Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award, the highest title in the UK for innovation in engineering.

The hand is the creation of David Gow, director of rehabilitation engineering services for Touch Bionics.

He said: "It's recognition from our peers and the award was particularly sweet because it was for engineering."

More than 250 patients worldwide have been fitted with the hand since its launch.
