9am Briefing: Anti-war group attack city defence firm
AN anti-war campaign group attacked an Edinburgh-based defence company this morning.
The group – calling themselves the F**k the War Coalition – destroyed at least ten windows at the Selex Galileo site at Crewe Toll, apparently using ball bearings.
Police were called to the incident and are still investigating.
Campaigners from the group contacted the Evening News at 3am to claim responsibility, protesting against the company's involvement in the UK's defence programme.
New plans for Haymarket site
DEVELOPERS behind the rejected 17-storey hotel scheme for Haymarket are expected to produce new plans for the site before the end of the month.
Irish firm Tiger has opened fresh talks with the city council over a new masterplan for the former Morrison Street goods yard, which has lain empty for more than 40 years.
Tiger's 250 million proposals, which also included offices, shops and restaurants, were thrown out after ministers accepted the findings of a public inquiry which stated the 17-storey hotel would spoil Edinburgh's skyline.
Baby in car smash
AN adult and a 14-month-old baby were involved in a two-car collision on the city bypass during rush-hour traffic yesterday evening.
The accident took place on the A720 at the Old Craighall junction just after 5pm.
Nobody was injured in the accident.
Forth oysters discovered
SCIENTISTS have discovered live oysters in the Firth of Forth decades after they were declared extinct, it was reported today.
Forth oysters were once considered the best in Britain and the discovery has sparked suggestion it may lead to future commercial production.
The oysters were found at a secret location, surprising scientists who believed they were extinct since 1957, owing to over-fishing.
Dr Elizabeth Ashton, from Stirling University's Institute of Aquaculture, reportedly said: "I put my wellies on and my raincoat and was walking along the slippery stones by the water's edge many times and then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw what I thought could be an oyster. The tide was still going out so I had to wait a while and yes, it was a specimen of a native oyster."
