2000-mile trip to create the perfect wedding cake

A CAKEMAKER from the Lothians made a round trip of more than 2000 miles to create an emergency wedding cake for a wealthy Scottish businessman.

Paul Bradford, founder of Linlithgow-based Truly Scrumptious, flew out to Monte Carlo to come to the rescue of the businessman, who said he couldn't get the fruit cake he wanted for his 12-tier cake.

He faced a bill of several thousands of pounds after he paid to fly Mr Bradford out to Monaco.

Mr Bradford spent three days in the kitchens of the world-famous Hotel de Paris creating the cake with ingredients transported from Scotland.

"France may be the best known gastronomic country in the world but the couple could not get the fruit cake they wanted there so we were called in," he said.

"It was by far the most expensive cake we've ever made."

The company, which has a branch in Corstorphine, is still making around 90 wedding and celebration cakes a week, despite the economic downturn.

Martin Thomson, of the company's backers Business Gateway, said: "Truly Scrumptious is a fantastic example of a business which has achieved excellent growth as a result of its strong reputation for high quality products."
