1,000 government laptops lost in 10 years
MORE than 1,000 laptops have gone missing from government departments in the past decade, according to new official figures.
At least 200 – 16 a month – went missing last year alone, including dozens each from high profile departments such as the Ministry of Defence and HM Revenue and Customs. The figures do not, however, include the problem-prone Home Office.
The statistics were released to MPs concerned about Whitehall data-handling following a series of high-profile blunders.
Mike Weir, an SNP MP, said the figures were "mind-boggling" and called for an end to even encrypted data being taken from government premises.
