£100m payout for BA and Virgin passengers caught up in collusion
MILLIONS of British Airways and Virgin Atlantic passengers won refunds of up to £10 per single flight in 2008 after both airlines admitted colluding over fuel surcharges on long-haul flights.
A 100 million payout that followed legal action in the United States included nearly 46m for BA passengers in the UK and almost 28m for Virgin Atlantic customers in this country. A further 29m went to travellers in the US.
The 5.7 million eligible BA and Virgin Atlantic passengers in the UK bought tickets between 11 August, 2004 and 23 March, 2006.
Compensation depended on the date of flights, as the surcharges increased over the two-year period from 6 to 30 per flight. The airlines agreed to pay one-third of the surcharge per ticket, so some received only 2 per flight.
