£500 price tag for comedy festival no laughing matter

ORGANISERS of the Capital's "breakaway" comedy festival have said any show can be part of the event – if it stumps up £500 for inclusion in the programme.

The four biggest Fringe venues have revealed plans to open up the event to all venues, promoters and performers. However, the fee for inclusion in the comedy festival brochure is over 200 more than that currently being charged to be in the official Fringe programme.

The move has also triggered fears that the comedy festival will take away business from venues which cannot afford the extra fee.

Director of the Stand Comedy Club, Tommy Sheppard, said: "I can't see there being any uptake of this. It's completely illogical to spend 500 to be in another venue's programme. It sounds like a ruse to get money out of performers who can't afford it."

It emerged earlier this week that the "Big Four" on the Fringe, which consists of Assembly, Gilded Balloon, Pleasance and Underbelly, were joining forces to promote the Edinburgh Comedy Festival for a second year.
