£1,000 costs over failed 90p dismissal claim
A CATERING assistant dismissed for undercharging her husband by 90p for a beer and a toastie has been ordered to pay £1,000 expenses after losing her unfair sacking claim.
Managers at the New Lanark Visitor Centre interviewed Ellen Lafferty after a colleague said she had served her husband without taking payment.
At the interview, Mrs Lafferty confirmed her husband had a can of beer and a toasted tuna sandwich and paid 3 in cash. She then stormed out and stayed off sick. She submitted a grievance claim saying her husband was "extremely angry" at being labelled a thief and she wanted "proof".
Mrs Lafferty, of Carluke, said she could not attend a subsequent disciplinary hearing as she did not have transport.
Mrs Lafferty told a Glasgow employment tribunal she charged her husband a "fair price''.
The tribunal rejected her unfair dismissal claim and ordered her to pay 1,000 towards New Lanark Trading's expenses in the case.
