THE LOVE BOAT BIG BAND
****
SPIEGEL GARDEN (VENUE 87)
A FINE wind blows the Love Boat into port for only two late nights this Fringe. With its mischievous crew moonlighting from other ships in harbour (notably the strings from McFall's Chamber and the brass section from Orkestra del Sol), this irresistible Big Band has only pleasure in mind.
Their piquant take on Glen Miller meets the Andrews Sisters transforms any song that takes their fancy, be it Sweet Dreams or The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea.
In a Palm Court setting led by Captain Thorburn at the piano and Able Seaman Ivitsky on double bass, this 17-piece band piece evokes 1940s and '50s radio. Heather McCleod's fruity voice is in glorious form, leading the three Bevvie Sisters in sultry harmonies as lethal as the free cocktails they serve.
With Tap Olé as surprise, Fred and Ginger-style guests, and three bathing beauties tripping through, the ambience is less old fashioned tea-dance, more 21st century jive. Get aboard if you can.
